Balance is a practice of readjusting again and again 🤹‍♀️

Hello my friend!

Last week I told you about the Nadi system of yoga, and this week I want to share another system of experience within the overall framework of yoga. The Gunas are part of the Kosha system of awareness, and I will once again give you the briefest of overviews. I think you will recognize it, I talk about this a lot.

Like attracts like. You’ve probably heard this before. If you are a student of the Law of Attraction, the idea of like attracting like is a base tenet. When trying to manifest money or create a new business, this is a great concept.

But when looking at balance, and trying to achieve sattva, we have to avoid likes.

Here is an example: if you’ve been sitting still in a chair, typing on a computer all day, and you want to use asana (movement) to feel closer to balanced again, then a restorative practice would not be a good practice. Stillness plus more stillness does not equal balance. It means more stagnation or stiffness.

But, in this case, if you go for a brisk walk, or swim, or do some sun salutations, you are releasing that stillness and moving the pendulum closer to balance, to SATTVA.

So think of these three gunas: Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva. We know that sattva is the balance, the pause, the homeostasis.

Tamas is stillness and Rajas is action. Both are needed in our lives. Effort AND Ease. Too much of either is not good for our bodies, our nerves, our minds, or our hearts. So we practice the opposite of what we have excess of so that we come into SATTVA. It takes some awareness and acceptance to find the parts of our lives that are out of balance.

So now, take out your journal again. This time, answer this: What is a habit of yours that might be keeping you out of balance? What might you try to find SATTVA?

That wraps up our exploration of BALANCE. What did you think? Drop me a reply if you like and let me know how you think balance may play a larger part in your day-to-day habits.

That’s it from me! I truly hope your week is full of ease, peace, and love.

From my heart to yours,
