Setting Goals with PIES: A Holistic Approach to Yoga Therapy for Menopause (Part 1)

Navigating the stages of menopause—perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause—can feel overwhelming. As a yoga therapist, my goal is to provide women with the tools to regain balance and thrive during this transformative time.

In my latest YouTube video, I walk you through an activity I use with clients to set meaningful goals for yoga therapy. It’s a simple but powerful exercise using the PIES framework: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual aspects of life. If you’re ready to explore how yoga therapy can support you, grab a pen and some paper, and let’s dive in!

What Is the PIES Framework?

PIES stands for the four pillars of well-being:

  1. Physical: Your body’s health and energy levels.
  2. Intellectual: Mental stimulation and reflective practices.
  3. Emotional: Stress management and emotional resilience.
  4. Spiritual: Your sense of connection and joy.

In yoga therapy, we use this framework to assess where you are now and create a personalized plan for moving forward.

How to Start Your PIES Assessment

Take a piece of paper and divide it into four sections: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual. Reflect on the following questions, writing down your thoughts.

Physical

  • How would you rate your physical health on a scale of 1 to 10?
  • Do you experience chronic pain or discomfort?
  • How often do you engage in physical activity?
  • What are your energy levels like?
  • Do you have a breathing (pranayama) practice?

Intellectual

  • How satisfied are you with your current level of mental stimulation and learning?
  • Do you have a self-study or reflective practice, like journaling or reading self-help books?

Emotional

  • How often do you feel stressed or anxious?
  • What practices help you feel calm and centered in times of emotional difficulty?
  • Do you have meditation or mindfulness practices that you enjoy?

Spiritual

  • Do you feel a sense of connection to something greater than yourself?
  • How often do you experience moments of true joy or bliss?

Why This Assessment Matters

This exercise isn’t about judging where you are; it’s about observing your experience to identify areas where you might need support or inspiration. In yoga therapy, balance across the PIES framework is key to creating a sense of homeostasis—a state where all parts of your being are working harmoniously together.
