Yoga for Kapha Body

Viviane Wolfe | APR 10, 2023

Hello my friend!

Did you know that you can feel the seasons in your body? In spring, KAPHA is the dosha that is most prominent, according to ayurveda (the life science that accompanies yoga). The main elements of kapha are earth and water. That means, during spring you may experience these elements in your body.

Earth is cool, stable, heavy, dry, rough, gross, dense, dull, and hard

Water cools, moistens, adheres, soothes, softens, smoothes, dulls, and spreads.

When we look at the body through this lens, it’s important to remember we are looking for BALANCE. Not too much or too little of any one element, aspect, or dosha.

When the Kapha in the body is balanced, it is hearty, strong, easy going and steady. Strong immune system. Low body temperature.

When the body has too much or too little kapha, it can be congested, like sinuses or allergy issues, overweight, slow, stagnant. Conditions like diabetes, asthma, edema, and heart disease are associated with too much Kapha.

So how do we bring balance? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Break up stagnation with movement. Go for a walk or get on your yoga mat.
  2. Develop a morning routine to eliminate excess music and phlegm
  3. Warm yourself up: wear extra layers, drink your water warm, take warm baths

If you are experiencing excess kapha in the form of sinus congestion, try this marma point massage:

  • Phana: the point on either side of the nose, just above and to the outside of the nostril opening
  • Gently press and rub in small circles for up to 5 minutes to release sinus pressure, congestion and headaches.
  • Optional: add a massage oil that uses camphor, eucalyptus, or peppermint to further open the sinuses.
