Understanding the Importance of Playfulness:

So, what exactly is playfulness? Well, it's like a breath of fresh air for the soul—a light-hearted, spontaneous way of being that brings joy, creativity, and vitality to our lives. And the benefits? Oh, they're endless! From boosting our mood and reducing stress to increasing our resilience and fostering connection with others, playfulness is like a magic elixir for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Societal pressures and cultural norms can sometimes put a damper on our playful spirit, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Yep, that's right. Whether it's the pressure to be productive, the expectation to "act our age," (oh man, I hate this one) or the stigma surrounding aging and menopause, there are plenty of roadblocks that can stand in the way of us embracing our playful nature.

Awareness is the first step towards reclaiming our playfulness. By recognizing the societal pressures and cultural norms that may be holding us back, we can start to challenge those outdated beliefs and give ourselves permission to let loose and have fun.

So go ahead, embrace your inner child, and let your playful spirit shine! Whether it's dancing like nobody's watching, getting lost in a creative project, or simply allowing yourself to be silly and spontaneous, know that playfulness is not only good for the soul but also an essential ingredient for a vibrant and fulfilling life.

Ayurvedic Approach to Nurturing Creativity:

What's the deal with Ayurveda and creativity? Ayurveda teaches us that each of us is made up of a unique combination of doshas—energies that govern different aspects of our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. And when it comes to creativity and playfulness, we're talking about Vata dosha—the dosha that's all about spontaneity, joy, and exploration.

Now, let's talk about how we can enhance our Vata dosha and tap into our creative flow. First up, try eating uplifting foods. Picture yourself savoring juicy fruits like oranges and berries, indulging in warming spices like ginger and cinnamon, and nourishing your body with wholesome grains like quinoa and millet. These goodies not only help enhance our Vata dosha but also fuel our creativity and zest for life.

Ayurveda also offers up lifestyle practices. Enjoy invigorating herbs like ginger and turmeric and cultivate energizing practices like morning walks in nature and playful dance sessions, there are plenty of ways to enhance our Vata dosha and cultivate a sense of playfulness and exploration in our lives.

Whether you're sipping on a spicy chai latte, taking a leisurely stroll in nature, or getting lost in a creative project, know that you have the power to tap into your inner child and let your creativity flow freely.

Yoga Asanas for Cultivating Joy:

Dancing Pose (Natarajasana)—a dynamic pose that invites us to embody the spirit of playfulness and self-expression. Begin by standing in Mountain, reach one arm up and the other catches the foot behind. Then kick the foot into your hand and reach the heart forward, as if you're gracefully dancing through life. With each breath, let yourself adapt and flow like a dancer, feeling the joy and freedom that comes from moving your body with abandon.

Happy Baby (Ananda Balasana)—a pose that's like a big ol' hug for your inner child. Lay on your back, pull your knees into your chest, then reach between your knees and grab hold of your feet. Gently rocking from side to side like a happy little baby. With each rock, feel your cares and worries melt away, replaced by a sense of joy and lightness in your heart.

Some other playful poses to consider are Tree Pose (Vrksasana) , Wild Thing (Camatkarasana), and Wild thing variation called Stargazer, there are plenty of poses to explore that awaken the body and spark joy.

So go ahead, let your inner child come out to play as you flow through this sequence of joyful yoga poses. Whether you're dancing like nobody's watching or giggling like a happy baby, know that you have the power to infuse your yoga practice with joy and playfulness.

Pranayama and Meditation for Inner Lightness:

Let’s chat about Kapalabhati breath, also known as Skull Shining Breath. This invigorating pranayama technique is like a burst of sunshine for the soul, helping to clear out any mental cobwebs and fill us with a sense of lightness and vitality. Start by sitting tall, taking quick, forceful exhales through the nose, followed by passive inhales. With each breath, feel your spirits lifting and your inner light shining brighter than ever. Start slowly and increase your speed as you feel comfortable, continue for 1-3 minutes.

Also try out Lion's Breath (Simhasana)—a playful pranayama technique that's sure to bring a smile to your face. Begin by sitting tall, inhaling deeply through the nose, and then sticking out your tongue and exhaling forcefully while roaring like a lion. Yep, you heard that right! It may sound silly, but trust me, it's a surefire way to release tension, lighten the mood, and tap into your playful side. I also practice this while in Sphinx pose, and in Goddess pose, and they are always enjoyed when I bring them into group classes.

Meditation is also a tool in our yoga toolbox to try. This is where we dive deep into the inner realms of our being, cultivating gratitude, mindfulness, and a playful attitude towards life's challenges.

Start with sitting in quiet stillness, bringing your awareness to your breath and allowing each inhale to fill you with gratitude for the present moment. With each exhale, let go of any tension or worry, allowing yourself to be fully present and open to the beauty and wonder of life. It's like taking a mental vacation, allowing yourself to step back from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with your inner lightness and joy.

Mindfulness Practices for Present Moment Awareness:

So, why exactly are mindfulness practices so darn important? Easy, it’s because they're like a magic magnifying glass, allowing us to zoom in on the present moment and savor every delicious detail. By cultivating present moment awareness, we can break free from the grip of past regrets and future worries, and instead, fully immerse ourselves in the beauty and wonder of the here and now.

You know I’ve got a whole smorgasbord of mindfulness practices to choose from, each one offering its own unique flavor of present moment awareness and joy.

First up, let’s explore sensory awareness meditation—a practice that invites you to tune into your senses and fully experience the world around you. Begin by sitting in quiet stillness, bringing your awareness to the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and sensations of the present moment. With each breath, let yourself be fully present and open to the wonder and beauty of life unfolding before you.

A big mindful practice I offer to clients is mindful eating—a practice that's like a love letter to your taste buds. Picture yourself savoring each bite of food, fully appreciating the colors, textures, and flavors that dance on your tongue. With each chew, let yourself be fully present and grateful for the nourishment that your food provides, allowing yourself to slow down and savor the simple joys of eating.

And you can also try out playful visualization exercises. This is where you let your imagination run wild, tapping into your inner child and embracing a sense of wonder and curiosity. Picture yourself floating on a cloud, dancing with unicorns, or exploring a magical forest—all from the comfort of your own mind. With each visualization, let yourself be fully present and open to the infinite possibilities that lie within.

Embracing Creativity and Spontaneity:

Why are creativity and spontaneity so gosh darn important? They're like the Bob Ross that adds happy little trees and excitement to our days, keeping us on our toes and infusing our lives with a sense of wonder and possibility. By embracing creativity and spontaneity, we open ourselves up to new experiences, perspectives, and ways of being in the world.

Whether it's dancing like nobody's watching, painting like Picasso, singing like Beyoncé, or simply spending time in nature, there are countless ways to tap into our creative spirit and embrace spontaneity with open arms. The key is to let go of any self-imposed rules or expectations and allow ourselves to follow our hearts and explore what brings us joy and fulfillment.

So just do it—dust off that paintbrush, crank up the music, and let your creativity run wild. Whether you're getting lost in a dance party in your living room or painting a masterpiece in your backyard, know that you have the power to embrace creativity and spontaneity in all areas of your life.

As you go forth on your journey through menopause, I encourage you to incorporate these practices into your daily routines and approach life with a sense of curiosity, openness, and playfulness. Whether you're dancing in the kitchen, painting on a canvas, or simply taking a leisurely stroll in nature, know that you have the power to infuse your days with joy, vitality, and grace.

Embrace your inner child, follow your heart's desires, and let the magic of playfulness guide you on this beautiful journey of menopause. Life's too short to be anything but joyful, so go ahead and let your light shine bright.

Mwah 😘Take good care of yourself!
