Lessons from the Headless Goddess

Hello my friend!

We are closing our March exploration of Awakening to Spring and it’s been a really fun month. I am so pleased with everyone who participated in teh Online Yoga Retreat last week, it was a joy practicing with you!

Today I wanted to share with you the story of Chinnamasta, the Headless Goddess. She is a symbol of personal transformation through awareness and acceptance.

The TL:DR of Chinnamasta is when she felt her spiritual energy rising, she cut off her head to free the energy from ego and identity. The lesson is that to really “know thyself” you must let go of the labels you’ve put upon yourself. You are so much more than your job, your relationships, your gender, race, upbringing. When you metaphorically rip off the head of who you were, you will be free to be a truer You. Also, she is represented holding her head facing towards her body, serenely observing what she sees. Chinnamasta is the goddess of removing all obstacles that stand between you and that joy of complete awareness and acceptance that comes in enlightenment, and the ability to observe all that you experience from a detached place, knowing that you are not what you experience.

From this story, we can pull a couple of journal prompts that you may find interesting.

  1. The gold standard: What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
  2. What would need to change now for you to start doing #1?
  3. What aspects of your identity would you like to change or release? Why?

I want to remind you that the first rule of yoga is AHIMSA, compassion. So as you journal, be very very kind to yourself. Try to stay detached from the outcomes of this exploration, observe it from an outside perspective.
