Yoga for Awakening & Fresh Starts – Lesson 7

Embrace Change with Ease: Creating Space for Transformation in Midlife

As we approach the transition from winter to spring, a natural shift occurs—not just in the world around us but within ourselves. This period offers a unique opportunity to pause, reflect, and set intentions before diving into action. In Ayurveda and many other wisdom traditions, spring represents renewal, making it the perfect time to clarify our wellness and lifestyle goals.

At Zen X Yoga, we believe in harnessing this transition intentionally. Before we step fully into transformation, we must first create space for it. Let’s explore how movement, breathwork, and mindfulness can help us cultivate openness and readiness for change.

Why We Need Space Before Transformation

Change doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, the first step of transformation isn’t action—it’s contemplation. The initial phase of meaningful change is thinking about what we want, why it matters, and how we can prepare ourselves physically, emotionally, and energetically.

By taking the time to set intentions and clear stagnant energy, we create an internal landscape that welcomes transformation rather than resists it. This is what we’ll focus on today: preparing for change with awareness, presence, and joyful movement.

A Simple Practice to Cultivate Openness

I

Let’s start with a grounding movement and breathwork sequence that invites space into your body and mind.

1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana) for Grounding & Awareness

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart, feeling a strong connection between your soles and the earth.
  • Arms can be at your sides with palms facing forward or brought together over your heart.
  • Close your eyes or soften your gaze, taking slow, deep breaths.
  • Notice areas in your body that feel dense or compressed—acknowledge where more space is needed.
  • Set a simple, positive intention, such as “I am open to new possibilities” or “I embrace change with ease.”

2. Side Bends to Expand & Uplift

  • Inhale, sweep your arms overhead, interlacing your thumbs.
  • Exhale, gently bend to the right, creating space in your left side body.
  • Inhale, return to center, reaching high.
  • Exhale, side bend to the left.
  • Repeat a few times, flowing with your breath, feeling the expansion and openness in your body.

3. Breath of Joy to Energize & Release Stagnation

This invigorating breathwork practice helps shake off stagnation and invites fresh energy.

  • Inhale 1/3 of your breath while sweeping your arms forward to shoulder height.
  • Inhale 1/3 more while spreading your arms into a T-shape.
  • Inhale fully while reaching your arms overhead.
  • Exhale forcefully with a “HA” sound as you fold forward, releasing tension.
  • Repeat for five rounds, then return to standing, noticing the energy shift within you.
