Lesson 28 | Breathe Through It: A Gentle Breathwork Practice for Emotional Balance in Midlife
Viviane Wolfe | JUL 25, 2025

Hi there, beautiful soul.
Welcome to Zen X Yoga: a space created especially for women in midlife who are ready to feel more grounded, empowered, and connected in this season of life. I’m Viviane Wolfe, a yoga therapist and fellow Gen Xer, and I’m so glad you're here.
Today, we’re exploring a simple yet powerful breathwork practice designed to help you release stress and achieve emotional balance.
This is Lesson 28 of our 48 Transformative Lessons for Midlife, and it’s one you can return to anytime you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just a little off-center. The best part? You don’t need to change clothes, roll out a mat, or carve out an hour of your day. All you need is a few minutes, a quiet-ish space, and a willingness to just breathe.
Let’s be real, midlife can be intense.
There are days when it feels like everything is happening all at once: hormones shifting, work stress building, caregiving responsibilities increasing, and your own needs getting shuffled to the bottom of the list.
It’s easy to feel emotionally flooded, disconnected from your body, or stuck in cycles of worry and tension.
That’s why I keep returning to breathwork. It’s one of the most accessible tools I know for helping us pause—just for a few moments—and reconnect with ourselves. No equipment. No pressure. Just your breath.
Breath is a bridge between your body and your mind, your thoughts and your nervous system, your inner wisdom and your external world. When we become aware of our breath, we become aware of ourselves again.
This practice is for you, so do it your way.
I’ll be lying on my back because I love the support of the ground beneath me. It helps me drop into my breath and really feel it moving through my body. But you can absolutely sit upright in a chair, lie on your side, rest in child’s pose, or sit cross-legged. Choose what feels best today.
Want to make it extra cozy? Grab a soft blanket, a pillow, light a candle, or sip some tea first. Give yourself permission to slow down and settle in.
Let’s begin by simply noticing your breath—no need to change it yet.
Where do you feel your breath? In your chest? Belly? Sides? Back?
Is it deep or shallow? Fast or slow? Even or uneven?
Now let’s gently start to shape the breath using easy ratios. We’ll work gradually—no forcing, no pushing.
Try this progression:
Inhale 4 / Exhale 4
Inhale 4 / Hold 2 / Exhale 4
Inhale 4 / Hold 4 / Exhale 4
Inhale 4 / Hold 4 / Exhale 6
Inhale 5 / Hold 5 / Exhale 7 (if this feels okay)
Repeat each ratio a few times, or stay with the one that feels most natural to you.
When you’re ready, release the breath ratios and simply allow your body to breathe itself. Let go of any effort. Just observe. Let it be easy.

Before you rush off to your next task or open your inbox, take a moment to pause and notice what shifted.
How do you feel now—physically, emotionally, energetically?
Did you notice any resistance or ease? Did holding the breath bring up any sensations or emotions?
Remember: There’s no right or wrong way to feel. Your breath is simply a mirror, reflecting how you’re doing in this moment.

How do I feel now, compared to how I felt before the practice?
Let your answer be honest. It might be subtle, or it might surprise you. Either way, it’s all part of the process of reconnecting with yourself, one breath at a time.
Thank you for practicing with me today. I hope you return to this breathwork as often as you need it. And know that I’ll be back next week with another gentle lesson for your midlife transformation.
With deep care,
