Lesson 22 | How to Stop Racing Thoughts with Yoga & Breathwork (Quick Relief for Overthinking)
Viviane Wolfe | JUN 6, 2025

Welcome to Zen X Yoga, where we blend yoga and Ayurveda to help Generation X women navigate the transformative journey of midlife with more ease, clarity, and balance.
If you’ve ever felt like your mind won’t stop racing—especially during moments of stress, anxiety, or hormonal shifts—you’re not alone. Racing thoughts, sleepless nights, and emotional overload are common experiences for women moving through perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause. But you don’t have to stay stuck in the mental storm.
In this week’s mini-lesson from our 48 Transformative Lessons for Gen X series, we explore a gentle and effective way to ground yourself using somatic tools, breathwork, and mindful movement—all in less than 10 minutes.
In yoga philosophy, we refer to mental chatter as “chitta vritti,” the whirlpool of thoughts, emotions, and internal dialogue that can overwhelm the nervous system. During midlife, as estrogen and progesterone shift, our ability to regulate stress and focus often becomes compromised.
The good news? You can’t think your way out of a racing mind, but you can breathe and move your way into calm.
This short practice is here to help you do just that.
You can do this calming practice sitting in a chair, on the floor, or the edge of your bed—whatever feels supportive for your body. We begin by tuning into physical sensations, noticing where the breath is, how the body feels, and where tension or energy might be present.
From there, we move gently into side bends using a therapeutic viniyoga approach, ideal for women in midlife who may be experiencing pelvic discomfort or joint sensitivity.
We follow the movement with a powerful breath practice called Nadi Shodhana, also known as alternate nostril breathing. This simple pranayama technique helps balance the left and right sides of the brain and has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve focus, and enhance emotional resilience.
By the end of the session, many people report feeling more centered, quieter inside, and able to access a deeper sense of clarity.
Imagine your thoughts as grains of sand in a jar of water. When the jar is shaken, everything becomes murky. However, when you place the jar down and let it rest, the sand slowly settles, and the water becomes clearer.
That’s what this practice is all about: settling the storm so you can see clearly again.
