Feeling Anxious in Midlife? Try This Simple Seated Yoga Flow to Reclaim Your Calm

Best Yoga Poses to Release Tension & Reduce Anxiety

(Neck, Shoulders & Hips) -- Lesson 21

Hey Gen X goddess, if you've been feeling more tightly wound than usual, with tense shoulders, stiff hips, a clenched jaw, or a brain that just won't chill…you are not alone. Many of us in our community are experiencing similar struggles.

Midlife has a lot going on: shifting hormones, family changes, career pressure, and the growing desire to put yourself first, finally. But when anxiety creeps in, that calm you’re craving can feel way out of reach.

Here’s the thing: anxiety in midlife isn’t just in your head; it lives in your body. And yoga can help you move it through.

How Anxiety Shows Up in the Body (Especially in Midlife)

For Gen X women, anxiety doesn’t always scream. Sometimes it whispers:

  • Chronic shoulder tension or tight hips
  • Jaw clenching or headaches
  • Racing thoughts or irritability
  • Digestive issues
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Shallow breathing or feeling like you can’t take a full breath

Hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can amplify your stress response, putting your nervous system on high alert. That’s why even minor stressors can feel overwhelming during this phase of life.

Why a Seated Yoga Flow Can Help

In Lesson 21 of my YouTube series 48 Transformative Lessons for Perimenopause and Menopause, I guide you through a short, soothing seated yoga practice designed to:

  • Release tension in the neck, shoulders, and hips
  • Reset your nervous system with gentle movement
  • Incorporate breathwork (pranayama) to bring you back to center
  • Create a sense of ease and balance in your body and mind

And the best part? You don’t need a yoga mat, fancy props, or tons of time.

✅ Just a chair or cushion
✅ Just a few minutes
✅ Just you, showing up for your nervous system

This is perfect for when you don’t have the energy for a full flow but know your body needs a reset.

The Yoga Therapy Approach: Move First, Then Settle

As a yoga therapist, I always remind students that when they're anxious, their energy is elevated, and their bodies are in "fight or flight" mode. Trying to meditate or relax in that state can feel impossible.

This practice works with your body:

  1. Move to release the excess energy.
  2. Breathe to invite calm.
  3. Settle into stillness—because now, your body feels safe enough to do so.

This isn’t just stretching. It’s nervous system care, hormone support, and mental reset—all rolled into one gentle, accessible practice.
