Yoga for Stiffness & Circulation | Lesson 2 |48 Transformative Lessons for Gen-X through Yoga & Ayurveda.

Welcome to Zen-X Yoga, where we explore tools of yoga and Ayurveda to support self-transformation in midlife, especially for Generation X women navigating perimenopause, menopause, or post-menopause. I’m Viviane Wolfe, a yoga therapist here to help you reduce challenges, find balance, and thrive—body, mind, and heart.

In this series, we’re diving into 48 transformative lessons for 2025, designed to help you cultivate physical and emotional well-being. Today, we’re focusing on physical discomfort and pain management, specifically for the neck, shoulders, and spine.

Before we begin, a reminder: these practices are intended to complement your existing care plan. Always consult with your healthcare provider for chronic pain, arthritis, or injuries. This practice is designed to support your journey—not replace medical advice.

Let’s get started with a simple, seated practice. Whether you’re working at a desk, relaxing on the couch, or even seated at the edge of your bed, this practice can bring ease and comfort to your body.

Seated Yoga Practice: Relieve Tension in Neck, Shoulders, and Spine

Setting Up:

  1. Find a sturdy seat—chair, stool, couch edge, or any surface where your feet can rest flat on the floor.
  2. Sit comfortably, with your feet hip-width apart or wider.
  3. Take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth, allowing yourself to settle.

Neck Stretches:

  1. Lateral Stretch: Dip your right ear toward your right shoulder. Breathe into the stretch along the left side of your neck. Hold for a couple of breaths, then return to center. Repeat on the other side.
  2. Forward Stretch: Bring your chin to your chest. Optionally, interlace your fingers behind your low back or clasp your elbows to enhance the stretch. Breathe deeply into the back of your neck.
  3. Gentle Lift: Interlace your fingers at the base of your skull. Lift your chin slightly, using your hands for support. Breathe into the front of your throat.

Shoulder and Spine Movement:

  1. Shoulder Rolls: Gently roll your shoulders backward and forward to release tension.
  2. Cow Face Arms: Raise your right arm, bending your elbow to place your hand on your spine. Reach your left arm down and back. If possible, clasp your hands or use a strap. Open your elbows wide. Hold for a few breaths and repeat on the other side.
  3. Eagle Arms: Wrap your right arm over your left, bringing your palms together or hugging your shoulders. Lift your elbows to shoulder height. Optionally, tuck your chin toward your chest. Repeat on the other side.

Cat-Cow Spinal Movements:

  1. Sit at the edge of your seat, with hands resting on your knees.
  2. Inhale: Lift your heart, tilt your pelvis forward, and look upward.
  3. Exhale: Round your back, tuck your chin, and tilt your pelvis backward.
  4. Repeat for several breaths, moving gently with your own rhythm.

Closing Your Practice:

  1. Return to a neutral seated position. Close your eyes or gaze downward.
  2. Notice the sensations in your body. What feels warm or cool? Has tension shifted? Observe without judgment.
  3. Bring your hands together at your heart in Anjali Mudra. Take a moment to thank yourself for showing up for this practice.
