Inside Yoga Therapy: A Sneak Peek at Posture Assessment

In this week’s YouTube video, I take you behind the scenes of one of the most foundational practices in yoga therapy: the postural assessment. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel “off” or experience tension in certain areas of your body, this process can provide valuable insights.

What Is a Postural Assessment?

When I meet with yoga therapy clients, one of the first things we often do is assess their posture. Why? Because how we hold ourselves tells a story about our body’s alignment, balance, and potential imbalances. These insights guide the therapeutic practices

I recommend, whether that’s targeted yoga poses, breathwork, or lifestyle adjustments.

In the video, I demonstrate a mini postural assessment on myself, breaking it down into simple steps that you can even try at home:

  1. Standing Alignment: Are your feet evenly weighted? Are your knees, hips, shoulders, and head aligned?
  2. Side View: Do your hips stack over your ankles? Are your shoulders or head drifting forward?
  3. Back View: Are your hips and shoulders even? Are your feet pointing in the same direction?
  4. Movement Postures: For example, Warrior I or Table Pose can reveal imbalances in flexibility or strength.

These observations are never about judgment—there’s no “perfect” posture. Instead, it’s about gathering information to help you move and feel better in your body.

Why It’s Worth Doing

Your posture affects more than just your physical body—it can influence your:

  • Joint health (like easing hip or back pain)
  • Pelvic floor function
  • Mood and emotional state
  • Endocrine system

And the best part? There’s no wrong answer except pain. Whatever we discover in an assessment, we use it as a starting point to create a practice that works for you.
